Gledhill’s range includes direct, indirect and specialist hot-water products, with separate instructions for different designs. StainlessLite Plus direct and indirect units are not interchangeable descriptions of the same installation. The manufacturer also publishes dedicated information for horizontal and heat-pump arrangements, so the exact range and model must be established before ordering.

We start with the current system and your intended result. Replacing a failed cylinder, increasing useful storage and installing hot water for a refurbishment are different briefs. If the existing Gledhill product is a thermal store rather than the proposed type of cylinder, we assess the system change explicitly. A brand name alone does not establish compatibility.

Assess storage and recovery together

Tell us about the busiest period of hot-water use, including baths, back-to-back showers and simultaneous outlets. We use that pattern alongside the selected model’s performance data and the available heat source. Nominal litres are only one part of the decision; reheating ability and the usable supply to the property affect the result.

If your present cylinder has recently started running cold sooner, we consider a fault before assuming that more storage is required. An immersion, control or boiler-circuit problem can reduce useful hot water without changing the vessel size. The survey separates restoration of existing performance from a deliberate increase in demand.

Match direct, indirect and specialist variants

A direct electric arrangement relies on immersion heating, while an indirect installation receives heat through a coil from a compatible source. Heat-pump and other specialist arrangements need the correct product specification and coordinated controls. We refer to the selected model’s current instructions rather than assume every cylinder sold under one family name accepts every heat source.

Where a wider heating project is planned, we coordinate the cylinder requirements with the responsible designer or installer. This avoids ordering a unit before coil compatibility, recovery expectations or control interfaces have been resolved. Existing immersion backup, electrical capacity and maintenance access are included in the discussion where they form part of the intended installation.

Resolve physical fit and service access

We check the cupboard or plant space, the route through the property and the supporting location for the filled unit. Height restrictions may prompt consideration of a different product arrangement, but a horizontal unit must be a model designed for that installation. An upright cylinder cannot simply be laid on its side to fit the room.

Pipe connections, valves, electrical covers and serviceable components need usable access after installation. We discuss shelving, doors and boxing with the surrounding works in mind. Removing the old equipment also needs a defined route and scope, particularly in upper-floor flats or properties where later alterations have narrowed the original access.

Plan the unvented safety and supply installation

For an unvented model, we assess the available water supply and specify the relevant inlet controls, expansion provision and safety-discharge route. These components form part of the installation design. Existing components are retained only where suitable for the selected product and in appropriate condition; matching the cylinder capacity does not prove they can all be reused.

The work requires competence appropriate to unvented hot-water systems, with electrical or gas work handled under the relevant requirements. Building-control arrangements are identified for the project where applicable. We explain any pipe-route alteration or access work before installation, rather than discover after delivery that the required discharge cannot be accommodated.

Install and commission the agreed model

The installation sequence covers safe isolation, removal where included, positioning and the specified plumbing and controls connections. We agree the service interruption with occupants or the managing agent. If opening the old installation reveals additional defects, we explain the finding and revised scope before extending the work.

Commissioning follows the selected product instructions and the completed arrangement. At handover, we explain the normal heating controls, records and servicing requirements. Manufacturer warranty terms are checked for the actual product and registration process; they are not a universal promise covering every connected component or all future hot-water faults.

Compare the complete installation scope

The proposal names the Gledhill model and capacity, then sets out removal, connection changes, controls and commissioning. A restricted removal route or altered discharge run can matter more to the labour scope than the difference between two cylinder sizes. Where the survey reveals a need for cupboard alterations or a different heat-source arrangement, those items are identified before the installation is agreed.
