Enquire about this serviceStart with what the boiler is doing
Useful information includes the make and model, the displayed fault code, whether heating and hot water are both affected, and when the problem occurs. A short description such as “heating starts, then pressure rises and the boiler stops” is more useful than guessing which part needs replacing.
Include previous repair details and whether the behaviour changed after other plumbing work. A fault code can narrow the investigation, but does not prove one component has failed. The assessment should consider the appliance, its controls and the connected system before a repair is proposed.
Loss of heating is not the same as every hot water fault
On a combi boiler, a fault can affect tap water while radiators continue to work. In a home with a separate cylinder, the boiler may still heat the radiators while the stored hot water controls or heating circuit have a problem. A single cold shower can also have a local mixing fault.
If possible, tell us whether other hot taps are affected and whether you have a cylinder. Do not remove covers to identify components. A photograph of the outside of the boiler, its display and any visible cylinder label is enough to help direct the enquiry.
What repair assessment and approval should cover
After investigation, the repair discussion should identify the fault found, the proposed work and any uncertainty or further testing needed. Some repairs depend on obtaining a model-specific part. Others reveal a wider issue such as pressure loss in hidden pipework that requires a separate investigation.
Ask whether the proposed work addresses the cause or only restores operation temporarily. If replacement is suggested, request the reason and the repair alternative where one exists. We do not base a boiler replacement recommendation solely on age or a single description submitted through the contact form.
What a boiler service is for
A service follows the requirements for the particular appliance and its condition. It provides a scheduled opportunity to assess operation and maintain the boiler, with the work and findings recorded. Tell us about intermittent symptoms when booking: a machine that happens to run during the appointment can still have a fault that needs diagnosis.
A service and a landlord gas safety check are different scopes. If you need both, say so when enquiring rather than assuming one includes the other. Follow the manufacturer’s service schedule and warranty conditions; keep previous records available for the attending professional.
Safe checks before the visit
You can read the external display and compare normal user settings with the appliance manual, provided the area is safe and dry. Note an obvious supply interruption or changed timer. Do not open the boiler casing, work on gas components, test live wiring or repeatedly reset a boiler that locks out.
If you suspect a gas escape, a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you suspect carbon monoxide, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from outside in a safe place. Avoid flames and operating electrical switches. Seek urgent medical help for suspected exposure, and call 999 if anyone has severe symptoms. Do not wait for an online booking response.
Gas boiler work requires a Gas Safe registered engineer qualified for that appliance and work category. Check the engineer’s identification before work begins.
Access and information that help the visit
Clear ordinary stored items from around the appliance if this can be done safely, and arrange access to the controls and relevant rooms. Do not dismantle boxing or move fixed equipment yourself. In flats, let us know if plant, flues or isolation points are behind a locked communal door.
Landlords and facilities teams should provide tenant contact arrangements, authorisation limits and the reporting requirements for the property. If hot water or heating has failed at occupied business premises, describe the operational impact so the discussion reflects actual needs rather than only the appliance model.
Request the right boiler appointment
Use the enquiry form with your postcode, boiler information and whether this is a breakdown, intermittent fault or routine service. State any pressure readings as observations and say whether they were taken with the system cold or running. We can then clarify the appropriate scope and availability.
After the work, keep the diagnosis, repair details and service record. If the fault returns, note whether it is the same behaviour or a new symptom. That record supports a more useful follow-up than repeatedly resetting the boiler without documenting what happened.
Start with written details in the enquiry form. If photographs would help, the team can request them by email after your initial enquiry; the form does not accept image uploads. Only take photographs where access is safe.
Questions we get asked
- Can a service fix a breakdown?
- A fault may be discovered during maintenance, but diagnosis, replacement parts and repair can require a different scope. Report the breakdown when booking so it is not treated as routine servicing.
- Do I need a new boiler if it loses pressure?
- Not necessarily. The loss may originate elsewhere in the heating system. The source and repair options need assessment before deciding whether replacement is appropriate.
- Can you service a boiler in a commercial property?
- Describe the appliance and premises when enquiring. The correct work category and scope depend on the installation; a domestic appliance in a business setting and commercial plant are not interchangeable descriptions.
