Boiler losing pressure: causes and next steps

A sealed heating system that repeatedly loses pressure needs its cause investigated. The water loss may be at a radiator, concealed pipework or the boiler, while expansion or pressure-relief problems can create a pattern of rising and falling readings. Repeatedly topping up does not establish which fault is responsible.

Readings need context

Write down the pressure when the system is cold and, if it operates normally and safely, note what happens during an ordinary heating cycle. Use the correct appliance instructions for the acceptable range. A number taken while hot is not directly comparable to one taken after the system has cooled.

Also record how quickly the reading changes: over weeks, overnight, or within one cycle. Tell the engineer whether the boiler stops with a code and whether pressure loss began after bleeding radiators or other work. The timing helps shape an investigation without proving a particular component has failed.

The boiler gauge is not your tap pressure

The gauge on a sealed heating installation usually shows pressure in the heating circuit. This is different from the incoming water pressure at a kitchen tap. Weak shower flow and a low boiler gauge may be separate problems, so describe each symptom instead of assuming one explanation.

Not all heating systems use the same arrangement. Some are open vented rather than sealed and may not have an equivalent filling procedure. If you cannot identify the system, provide photographs of the boiler and its visible controls; do not search for a valve to turn based on a different model’s instructions.

Visible water loss is useful evidence

Look from a safe, accessible position for dampness around radiators, valves and exposed pipework. A small leak can leave staining rather than a large puddle. Tell the professional exactly where marks appear and whether the surface becomes wet again during use.

Do not tighten hot fittings, remove floorboards or reach inside the boiler. If water is reaching wiring, switches or other electrical equipment, keep clear and request urgent help. The aim of your observations is to locate clues, not to disturb a potentially pressurised or unsafe installation.

No visible leak does not rule out a problem

Pipework may run beneath floors or behind finished surfaces. The appliance can also require internal examination, and water may leave through a discharge route that is not obvious from indoors. The investigation should therefore distinguish the boiler from the wider heating circuit before disruptive access is proposed.

Ask how the suspected location will be tested and what evidence would justify opening a floor or wall. Leak detection can be a separate scope where hidden pipework is involved. Tell us about access hatches, recent renovations and known pipe routes, but do not start removing finishes in anticipation of a diagnosis.

Pressure rises sharply, then falls when cold

A repeated large rise during heating followed by a low cold reading can indicate that expansion or relief arrangements need examination. It is a pattern to report, not proof that a specific part needs replacement. Take photographs of the gauge at different times if safe, rather than repeatedly changing the filling pressure.

An externally visible discharge pipe may provide a clue if it releases water. Observe only from a safe position and do not touch the discharge, which may be hot. Never plug, cap or redirect a relief outlet to stop water loss; the function and cause need professional assessment.

Should you top up the pressure?

Manufacturers provide model-specific user guidance for some systems. If your manual permits a user top-up, its instructions and limits apply; this page does not substitute a universal filling procedure. Do not proceed if you are unsure of the control, the system is leaking actively or there is any electrical or hot-water hazard.

When the pressure repeatedly falls, arrange diagnosis rather than treating refilling as an ongoing solution. Repeated topping up makes it harder to describe the original rate of loss and does not address the source. Tell the engineer how often you have needed to do it and any changes you have noticed.

What the assessment should establish

The professional should assess the pressure behaviour and relevant parts of the installation, then explain the finding and proposed work. A pressure gauge reading alone is not a reason to sell a new boiler. Repair may involve an appliance component, a radiator connection or pipework elsewhere.

Work on the gas boiler and its relevant connections must be undertaken by an appropriately qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not remove the casing or attempt internal pressure, gas or electrical tests yourself. Ask what further checks are required if the initial visit cannot establish the source with confidence.

Yes, a leak on a sealed heating circuit can affect its pressure. A visible radiator leak is useful evidence, but the rest of the system may still require assessment.
Will replacing the boiler stop pressure loss?
Only if it addresses the actual cause. A new appliance cannot repair leaking distribution pipework, so locate the fault before choosing replacement.
