Radiator leaking from the valve: what to check
A radiator leaking from its valve may have a failed seal, a leaking connection or a damaged valve body. Water can run along the fitting, so the lowest drip does not always identify the fault. Avoid tightening or dismantling a hot, pressurised valve; contain the water safely and arrange an assessment.

Look at the valve from a safe distance and note where the first fresh moisture appears. Water around the spindle beneath the control head differs from water at the connection to the radiator or at the pipe entering the valve. A leak from the radiator panel itself needs a different repair from a leaking valve.
Photograph the whole assembly as well as the wet area, without disturbing the fitting. Tell the plumber whether the radiator has a numbered thermostatic head, a simple handwheel or a capped valve. Do not remove unfamiliar parts to identify them. The relationship between the pipe, valve and radiator is often more useful than a very close photograph of a drop.
Why a radiator valve can leak
Possible causes include deterioration of a seal, a poorly sealing connection, corrosion or damage to the fitting. Recent decorating or movement of a radiator can also be relevant history. These are possibilities rather than a diagnosis: the condition of the pipe and the exact point of escape must be checked before deciding what to repair.

That matters because the removable temperature-control head and the water-containing valve body are not the same part. Replacing a head to solve a control problem will not automatically repair a leak from a pipe connection or the body underneath it.
What you can do without dismantling the valve
If it is safe, protect the floor with a suitable container and keep children and pets away from hot water. Note whether the drip changes when the heating is running or after it cools. Turning the heating off using its normal user control can allow the system to cool, but it does not remove the water or pressure already in the circuit.
Do not assume closing a thermostatic control guarantees secure isolation, and do not loosen nuts, pull the spindle or try to remove the valve. Operating a damaged fitting can worsen the leak. If the flow increases, containment is failing or water is entering another room, arrange urgent help and explain that a heating circuit is involved.
Why turning off the house water may not stop it
A radiator belongs to the heating system rather than simply being an open branch of the cold-water supply. Closing the incoming main may therefore leave water in the heating circuit. How it is safely isolated depends on the system design, the condition of the valves and the work required.
If the boiler pressure reading is visible without opening anything, note it for the attending professional. Falling pressure can support the history of water loss, but it does not prove this is the only leak. Avoid repeatedly topping up to keep the heating running while an unexplained loss continues; the underlying cause still needs investigation.
A repair to the connection or a replacement valve?
A sound valve with a failed connection may permit a local repair. Deterioration within the valve or damage to the body may justify replacement. A matching replacement must suit the pipe connection, radiator arrangement and control requirements, rather than simply resemble the old fitting.
The work may require isolating and draining part of the system, followed by refilling and checks appropriate to that installation. Ask whether the opposite valve, adjoining pipe and radiator connection are serviceable. If several components are deteriorated, it can be more practical to agree the wider local repair than discover each weakness during separate visits.
Access, finishes and the condition of the system
Tell us if the pipe disappears into a tiled floor, the radiator is behind fitted furniture or decorative covers restrict access. A short exposed pipe gives less room to renew a connection than a longer accessible run. The repair proposal should account for those constraints before promising that everything can remain in place.
A valve leak does not by itself justify replacing the boiler, flushing the entire system or fitting a new radiator. Equally, broader symptoms should not be ignored: repeated pressure loss, several corroding joints or poor circulation may warrant a separate heating assessment. Ask what the evidence supports and which work is essential now.
When the leak needs urgent attendance
An occasional contained drip differs from hot water spraying, a container filling quickly or water spreading beneath a floor. Keep away from any wet electrical fitting or appliance. Questions we get asked
- Should I tighten the leaking nut myself?
- Not as a blind first step. The source may be elsewhere, and overtightening can damage a fitting or stress the pipe. Hot or pressurised heating water adds risk. Have the leak location and isolation checked.
- Does a leaking valve mean I need a new radiator?
- Not necessarily. The valve and its connections may be repairable independently if the radiator is sound. Corrosion or a leak from the radiator body changes that assessment.
- Can I keep the heating on until the appointment?
- That depends on the severity and system condition. Report an active leak and ask for job-specific advice. If the leak is worsening, switch off using normal controls where safe and arrange urgent assistance; switching off does not drain the system.
- Is it the same fault as a stuck TRV?
- No. A stuck temperature control affects regulation of flow, while a water leak concerns a seal, joint or component containing water. Both faults can exist together and need separate checks.
