The work we handle

Loyal Plumbers installs indirect unvented hot-water cylinders across London and inside the M25. The cylinder receives heat through a coil from a compatible external source, while mains water supplies the stored domestic hot water. We survey the heat source, controls, supply and demand together, then specify the cylinder and connected installation work.

Match the heat source and coil

Assess boiler or other source requirements against the selected cylinder model.

Specify supply and control arrangements

Plan primary heating, mains supply, expansion and safety discharge.

Install and commission together

Check the connected hot-water functions and explain everyday operation.

A clear route for your property.

Different faults and projects need different work. These are the main options for this service.

Connect stored hot water to the right heat source

An indirect cylinder must suit the source that will heat it. A conventional boiler arrangement and a heat-pump arrangement can require different coil performance and controls. We identify the existing source, its operating requirements and any planned change before selecting a model. The word indirect alone does not establish that every cylinder will perform appropriately.

Our installation work covers replacement of an existing indirect unvented cylinder and new arrangements as part of heating or refurbishment projects. If the property currently uses a vented cylinder or a different hot-water system, the conversion includes more than changing the vessel. We assess the full supply, safety and control alterations needed.

Assess demand alongside recovery

Storage provides hot water for busy periods, while recovery determines how the system restores it. We discuss baths, showers, simultaneous outlets and the time between substantial uses. The selected model’s performance must be considered under conditions relevant to the actual heat source, rather than taking a headline recovery figure as a universal household result.

An existing cylinder that has recently become slow to heat may have a control or circulation fault. We distinguish such problems from a design that has never met demand. If a repair would restore a suitable system, we explain it; if replacement is the agreed project, the specification addresses both storage and the connected heating function.

Plan the primary circuit and controls

The primary circuit carries heat from the source to the cylinder coil and is separate from the stored domestic water. Its pipe routes, valves and control arrangement need assessment. A cylinder can remain cold even while room heating works, so the presence of a functioning boiler is not proof that the existing cylinder circuit is suitable.

We coordinate the heat demand, temperature controls and required protective functions with the selected cylinder instructions. An immersion heater can provide a separate function where included in the design, but it has its own electrical supply and controls requirements. The proposal states which equipment and functions are included rather than assume every existing connection can be reused.

Verify mains supply and distribution

Unvented domestic hot water relies on the incoming supply. We assess the available conditions and the outlets expected to operate together, including any shared building supply. More storage does not overcome every flow restriction. If weak performance is already a concern, it belongs in the survey before capacity or product selection is settled.

The installation includes the specified inlet controls, expansion arrangement and distribution connections. We inspect the condition and suitability of existing parts before deciding on reuse. In managed buildings, access to shared isolation or rising mains must be agreed with the responsible party; a private flat booking does not authorise changes to services used by neighbours.

Resolve the cylinder position and discharge path

We survey the filled support requirements, delivery and removal route, working space and access to serviceable components. A replacement may have different connection positions despite a similar capacity. The installation plan identifies pipe changes and any boxing or finish work rather than leave those differences to be discovered after delivery.

The unvented safety-discharge arrangement must suit the model and applicable requirements. We check the route and termination before committing to a location. Do not assume that an existing waste pipe or external opening provides an acceptable connection. Where additional access or building work is needed, it is identified in the agreed scope.

Install and commission the connected system

We agree the interruption to hot water and any effect on heating before isolating and removing equipment. The installation then connects the selected cylinder, primary circuit, controls and safety components. Electrical work and any gas-appliance work require the relevant competence alongside competence for unvented systems.

Commissioning checks the completed arrangement and the intended heating functions. At handover, we explain the normal controls, reheating operation and relevant records. Servicing requirements follow the selected manufacturer instructions. A boiler service does not automatically include full cylinder maintenance, so the ongoing arrangements should identify both assets where present.

Define the cylinder and primary-side quotation

The proposal covers the selected cylinder, primary connections and control changes as well as the domestic-water and discharge installation. Existing zone valves, wiring and circulation arrangements are assessed before deciding what can remain. The cost therefore reflects the connected system, removal route and required access, with any separate boiler work or building alterations identified explicitly.

Arrange an indirect-cylinder survey

Send the postcode, current boiler or other heat-source details, cylinder information and the reason for replacement or installation. Include planned bathroom additions, occupancy changes and any wider heating project. If a designer has already specified a unit, provide the model so we can assess the installation against that proposal.

Loyal Plumbers covers domestic, landlord and business installations throughout London and inside the M25. The team can arrange email sharing of plans or accessible labels after the enquiry. We set out the cylinder, connected works, access, commissioning and any separate finishing tasks before the installation proceeds.

Common questions

Can any indirect cylinder be used with a heat pump?

No. Coil performance, operating temperatures and the complete controls arrangement must suit the heat source. The exact model specification needs checking; indirect is a broad category, not confirmation of heat-pump compatibility.

Will the boiler and cylinder water mix?

In the normal indirect arrangement, heat passes through the coil while the primary heating water and stored domestic water remain separate. The installation and controls must be appropriate for that design.

Can the immersion heater remain as backup?

Where the selected cylinder and electrical installation support it, an immersion can be included with a defined role. Its connections, controls and intended operation must be part of the agreed scope rather than assumed from the old installation.
