Identify solar thermal and solar electricity correctly
Solar thermal transfers collected heat through a suitable system to the cylinder. Solar photovoltaic panels generate electricity that may be used by compatible electric water-heating controls. These are different arrangements. A request for a solar cylinder needs to identify which system is planned before the product or connections are specified.
Our scope here is the cylinder-side installation and agreed associated plumbing. Collector work, rooftop access, specialist solar-circuit commissioning and photovoltaic electrical work belong with the appropriately competent specialist for the project. We coordinate the interfaces rather than assume that replacing the cylinder includes installing or certifying every part of a solar system.
Select a cylinder for the heat sources
For a solar-thermal arrangement, the cylinder needs the appropriate coil and control provision for the design. Telford’s Tempest indirect solar product is one example intended to combine solar thermal with a conventional boiler. That specific arrangement should not be generalised to every cylinder described as renewable-ready or every possible combination of heat sources.
We use the proposed model data and the solar designer’s requirements to establish which source serves each connection and how backup heating works. An immersion heater is a separate heating function, not an additional water coil. The specification must identify these parts clearly so an installer does not inherit ambiguous labels or assumptions about future connections.
Assess usable storage and household demand
Tell us how hot water is used during busy periods and when showers or baths normally occur. Solar contribution varies with the system and conditions, so the design also needs a practical backup strategy. Storage should be assessed with the heat-source arrangement and controls, not chosen purely because the cupboard has room for a larger unit.
If you are replacing an existing solar cylinder, describe both normal performance and any current fault. Poor delivery may involve controls, a heating source or distribution rather than a failed vessel. We distinguish the cylinder replacement need from specialist investigation of the solar system so the installation addresses the correct problem.
Coordinate control and sensor interfaces
The solar specialist and cylinder installer need an agreed control design, including the relevant sensor positions, heating priorities and backup operation. The cylinder’s own protective functions must remain effective. We establish those interfaces before fitting equipment, particularly when a new vessel is being connected to an older solar installation.
Electrical and specialist solar tasks are allocated to the appropriate competent person. We do not bypass cylinder controls to make an external controller operate, and occupants should not adjust concealed thermostats or safety devices. The final commissioning plan needs to show that each party checks its work and that the connected arrangement functions as intended.
Plan supply, discharge and installation space
Where the selected cylinder is unvented, water-supply performance, expansion provision and safety-discharge routing form part of the installation survey. A solar-related product still needs a complete hot-water safety arrangement. Existing components are assessed for suitability and condition rather than assumed reusable because the old system also used solar energy.
We check the filled support requirements, access to connections and the delivery and removal route. Additional coils or controls can change the space required around the vessel. The installation needs to remain serviceable after cupboards and boxing are finished; a cylinder that fits only when every surrounding panel is removed is not automatically a practical solution.
Agree installation and commissioning responsibilities
The proposal identifies cylinder removal where included, new plumbing, relevant heat-source connections and the required coordination with the solar specialist. It also states the shutdown arrangements and any separate electrical or building work. This is particularly important where a roof contractor, heating installer and electrician are working to different schedules.
At completion, the relevant connections and functions are checked and the combined handover explains normal operation and backup heating. Keep the cylinder and solar-system records distinguishable. A successful cylinder pressure or heating check does not by itself certify roof-mounted collectors, photovoltaic equipment or every part of a specialist solar circuit.
Separate cylinder work from the wider solar project
The quotation identifies cylinder supply, removal, pipe connections, controls and agreed commissioning interfaces. Work on collectors, roof access or the separate solar circuit is listed according to the responsibilities agreed with the relevant installer. The existing solar design, available model and number of heat sources can materially change the project, so a cylinder-only price should not be read as a complete solar-system replacement.
Request a coordinated cylinder proposal
Send the postcode, current hot-water arrangement and whether the project uses solar thermal or photovoltaic electricity. Include the proposed cylinder and solar-system details, the specialist contact and any relevant plans. The team can arrange email sharing after your enquiry to review the interfaces before the installation scope is agreed.
Loyal Plumbers supports homes, landlords and business properties across London and inside the M25. We explain the cylinder work, access and commissioning obligations clearly. Energy savings and the amount of solar contribution depend on the complete design, weather and usage, so the installation proposal does not promise a universal saving or year-round solar-only hot water.
Common questions
Do solar PV panels need a twin-coil cylinder?
Not simply because they produce solar electricity. A photovoltaic arrangement and a solar-thermal coil system work differently. The designer must specify how the electricity or heat reaches the water and which cylinder functions are required.
Does this service include installing rooftop collectors?
The service covers the agreed cylinder and associated plumbing scope. Rooftop collectors and specialist solar-system work need a separately defined competent contractor and coordinated commissioning responsibilities.
Can an existing solar cylinder be replaced by a standard one?
Only if the complete system design supports the change. Removing a required coil or control provision can make the arrangement unsuitable. We assess the source connections and intended future operation before specifying replacement.
