Temperature-control faults we investigate
Book an assessment for water that stays cold despite a normal heating schedule, overheats, heats inconsistently or repeatedly needs attention to a safety cut-out. These symptoms can involve a thermostat, but they do not prove that the thermostat is the failed part. We review when the fault occurs and how the cylinder is heated before agreeing the repair.
A cylinder heated by a boiler has a different control path from one heated directly by an immersion. Some installations include both. We identify the affected heating function and separate it from local shower mixing or hot-water delivery faults. This helps avoid replacing a cylinder control when the problem is confined to one outlet.
Identify the exact control and protective arrangement
We check the cylinder make, model and relevant component specification. A surface-mounted cylinder thermostat, an immersion thermostat and a combined thermostat and safety cut-out are not interchangeable choices. The replacement must suit the intended application and retain the required protective functions. A component that fits physically is not enough to establish compatibility.
Heatrae Sadia describes combined thermostat and safety cut-out arrangements on its domestic immersion products. Other models use their own approved components and installation detail. We work from the specific appliance information, including older model identification where necessary, rather than select a generic control by appearance. Parts availability is confirmed before a completion date is promised.
Diagnose before disconnecting the old component
The assessment follows the relevant demand, supply and control response to determine where heating stops or fails to stop. Electrical tests require safe isolation and competent working arrangements. On an indirect cylinder, related controls and valves can also affect the result. We explain the finding and any further investigation needed before extending the work.
If a safety cut-out has operated, the cause needs attention rather than repeated resetting. We distinguish ordinary temperature regulation from independent overheat protection. A repair must leave both appropriate for the installation. Bypassing a control to obtain temporary hot water is not an acceptable substitute for identifying the fault and carrying out the required repair.
Replacement and functional checks
Once the diagnosis and compatible part are established, we agree replacement and the necessary access. The fitting and connections are checked in accordance with the equipment requirements, and operation is tested after the work. Where more than one heating source is present, the scope identifies which functions have been checked and whether another source needs separate attention.
The handover explains what failed, what changed and the controls the occupant normally uses. We record any remaining defect or limitation rather than describe all hot-water performance issues as resolved by one replacement. If the cylinder itself is leaking or deteriorated, that is a separate finding with its own repair or replacement decision.
Access in cupboards and managed properties
Provide the visible cylinder and thermostat details, and tell us about fitted shelves, boxing or restricted electrical access. Move ordinary stored belongings if it is safe, but leave covers and wiring alone. The team can request photographs by email after your written enquiry. We can then prepare for the installation rather than arrive expecting an entirely different component.
For a rented flat or managed block, identify the person providing access and the person authorising repairs. A local cylinder control can still connect to services or controls outside the cupboard. If a common system is involved, its responsible party needs to participate. Agree interruptions to hot water and any access to locked service spaces before the appointment.
When overheating needs urgent attention
If water becomes dangerously hot, stop using affected outlets and keep occupants away from the risk of scalding. For an unvented cylinder discharging very hot water or steam, keep clear and switch off the heating sources using normal accessible controls only if safe. Do not turn off the water supply as a generic response to overheating, and do not touch relief valves or cap discharge pipes.
Report overheating as an urgent fault rather than booking a routine thermostat change. Do not remove electrical covers, test terminals or press concealed resets. Unvented-cylinder safety work requires an appropriately competent person, and electrical work requires suitable competence and safe isolation. Immediate danger to people takes priority over completing an enquiry form.
What affects the thermostat repair quotation
The repair scope depends on which control has failed, whether the replacement is available for that model and how the connections can be accessed safely. We separate diagnosis, the supported replacement and operating checks from any additional wiring or associated control repair. If the thermostat is working and the fault lies elsewhere, we explain that finding before proposing a different component.
Arrange the repair with the right scope
When contacting Loyal Plumbers, include your postcode, cylinder type if known, the heat source and whether water is cold, intermittent or excessively hot. Mention repeated cut-out operation and any recent electrical, boiler or cylinder work. Those details help us plan a diagnostic visit and distinguish it from replacement of an already confirmed failed part.
We support homes, landlords and businesses throughout London and inside the M25. The agreed scope identifies assessment, replacement parts and any related work needed to restore safe operation. If the original component is unavailable, we explain the supported alternatives and whether a wider change needs consideration rather than fitting an improvised substitute.
Common questions
Can a thermostat be replaced without changing the cylinder?
Often a confirmed control fault can be repaired separately where the cylinder and installation remain serviceable. Compatibility, access and the surrounding condition determine the repair. A cold cylinder alone does not prove the vessel needs replacing.
Can I reset the safety cut-out while waiting?
Do not open covers or operate concealed resets. Repeated cut-out operation needs investigation of the cause. Use only ordinary accessible controls and follow urgent guidance if there is overheating or dangerous discharge.
Will replacing the thermostat fix one cold shower?
Not necessarily. If other outlets are hot, the shower or its mixing arrangement may be responsible. Explain which outlets are affected so the investigation targets the relevant part of the system.
