After a meter replacement: checking the reading handover

After a water meter is replaced, check that the account explains the old meter’s final reading and the new meter’s starting reading. They are separate registers and may not run as one continuous number. An unusual bill following the exchange needs the handover checked before it is treated as proof of a new leak.

Keep the exchange date and both meter identities

Save the appointment record or notice and note the date the exchange occurred. Where available, retain the old and new serial numbers and the readings recorded at the change. Ask the supplier for missing information rather than trying to reconstruct it from memory. A clear sequence is especially helpful if a bill spans the exchange date.

If the replacement happened while you were away or during a wider network project, say what information you actually received. Do not assume the date on a later letter is the installation date. The supplier should be able to explain its asset and account records. A private plumber cannot verify an exchange they did not carry out merely by looking at the current meter.

Read each register within its own period

The final reading from the old meter and the initial reading from the replacement belong to different devices. A calculation that simply subtracts one from the other can be meaningless. Ask the supplier to show the consumption assigned to each period and identify any estimates used where a reading was unavailable.

Check units and dates as well as the numbers. A display format may differ between models, and red digits or decimal places can be confused with the main billing reading. Use the supplier’s instructions for the actual meter. Do not copy a number from an unfamiliar display without understanding which figure is requested, or submit a speculative correction to make the bill look more familiar.

Distinguish a changed display from a changed water use

A new smart meter may make usage information more visible than the previous arrangement. Seeing more frequent data does not itself mean the replacement created a leak. Equally, new visible leakage, loss of pressure or another symptom after attendance should be reported as an observation, with its timing clearly stated.

Keep the account question and the physical symptom distinct. The supplier can check meter records and its work, while a private plumbing concern may need a separate assessment. Do not remove a meter cover or connection to investigate an apparent change. Describe what happened before and after the appointment without assuming that timing alone proves which party or component caused the issue.

A useful meter-exchange record
RecordQuestion it answers
Old serial and final readingWhich device measured consumption before the change?
Exchange dateWhere should the account divide the two measurement periods?
New serial and starting readingWhich device and baseline apply after the change?
Estimated or actual statusWhich parts of the calculation are measured and which need later reconciliation?

Review the first bill carefully

Find the billing period, reading types and any adjustment linked to the exchange. A first actual reading after earlier estimates can create a catch-up amount that is not a measure of recent use alone. Ask for an explanation of the calculation if the bill does not make the split clear.

Compare the current consumption evidence with the household’s use and occupancy over the same dates. Avoid judging the whole account from a direct-debit change or a single unusually high total. If the serial number shown remains the old one, ask whether the bill covers the old period or whether the account update is incomplete. Our serial-mismatch guide covers that separate verification process.

Raise physical concerns through the appropriate route

If water is visible around the meter, report the location and condition to the supplier without entering or draining the chamber. If a private tap or pipe is actively leaking, arrange appropriate plumbing help and explain the recent exchange. Each party needs accurate findings rather than a general allegation that the new meter has made everything wrong.

Where there is unexplained ongoing use after the handover data has been clarified, ask what evidence supports private leak investigation. A meter is a measuring device; its replacement does not identify a concealed leak’s location. A focused next step should distinguish account reconciliation, supplier equipment checks and assessment of the private installation.

Retain a complete record for future comparisons

Once the supplier explains or corrects the account, keep the outcome with the exchange details. Use the verified new meter identity for later readings. If the issue is not resolved, retain a short chronology and follow the supplier’s complaint process rather than opening unrelated enquiries that lose the original context.

For a Loyal Plumbers enquiry, provide current physical symptoms and any confirmed supplier findings. Explain whether the account handover is settled or still uncertain so meter data is interpreted with the right limitations. We can discuss private leak investigation or repairs where appropriate, but billing reconciliation and meter exchange records remain with the supplier. The aim is to establish which problem needs solving before paying for work that addresses a different one.

Common questions

Should a new meter start at the old meter’s reading?
Not necessarily. They are separate devices. Ask the supplier to explain the old final and new initial readings and the consumption assigned to each period.
Does a higher bill after replacement prove the meter caused a leak?
No. Review the reading history and any actual physical symptoms separately. Timing alone does not establish a cause.
Can a plumber correct the exchange readings on my bill?
No. The supplier controls the account and exchange records. A plumber can investigate private plumbing concerns within an agreed scope.
