Stop the activity that caused the damage

Put the work on hold and prevent anyone from continuing to drill or cut in the area. A wall or floor can contain other services close to the damaged pipe, so the incident may need electrical or building assessment as well as plumbing repair. Do not assume the only risk is the visible water.

If water is near a drill, cable, socket or other electrical equipment, do not touch wet items or attempt further testing. Keep others away and seek emergency assistance where there is immediate danger. A small visible hole can release water into a concealed space, so the absence of a large puddle does not establish that the damage is minor.

Identify the affected system through controlled assessment

A punctured incoming-water pipe, stored-water connection and heating pipe can continue releasing water in different ways. Closing the familiar internal stop valve may limit an incoming escape but may not empty stored water or a heating circuit. Explain which safe control was operated and what happened afterwards.

Do not operate unfamiliar boiler, cylinder or communal valves to experiment. The attending plumber should identify the pipe and establish reliable isolation before removing the damaged section. If a screw remains in the pipe, leave it for that assessment; removing it can change the escape. Describe its position without trying to use it as a dependable plug.

Preserve a clear account of the incident

Record the location, the type of work underway and the approximate depth reached if known. A safe photograph of the wider area can help show nearby fittings and intended access. Keep any available pipe-route drawings. The purpose is to help locate and repair the damage, not to establish responsibility from an incomplete photograph.

In a fire-resisting wall or shared riser, reinstating the protective construction may require another competent trade’s involvement.

Costs depend on isolation, pipe material, working space, repair components and making good. Agree which surfaces will be opened and who restores them. If only emergency containment is possible initially, the handover should identify restrictions and the permanent repair still needed. A temporary stop to visible water is not the same as a completed installation repair.

Test the repair and reconsider the fixing position

After the agreed work, the affected system needs appropriate controlled restoration and leakage checks before the access is closed. The plumber should record what was repaired and any limitations. A heating circuit may require its operating condition restored separately from the incoming water supply, depending on the work undertaken.

Before restarting the original drilling job, review the route and proposed fixing with the relevant contractor. Keep useful location records so another person does not repeat the damage. A repaired pipe does not make the same drilling position suitable. Any protection or rerouting decision should follow the installation requirements rather than an improvised shield placed without assessment.
