What happens to household wastewater when a backwater valve shuts?
A closed backwater valve may stop downstream wastewater entering, but it can also prevent your own wastewater leaving through that route. Continued use can therefore create a problem inside the protected property. The operating plan must identify which facilities connect to the valve and what users should do during an event.

Discuss your plumbing workUnderstand the distinction between backflow and discharge
Protection against water travelling backwards does not create unlimited storage for water produced inside the building. If a route is closed, discharges from toilets, showers or appliances upstream still have to be accounted for. The installation design and operating instructions should address that situation explicitly.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea’s flood-protection guide identifies self-flooding as a consideration where a non-return valve closes while additional water is generated within the property. This is why a device purchase is only part of the decision. Users need to understand the completed system, not just the protective purpose printed on the product.
Identify the fixtures on the protected route
A toilet on another floor may still connect to the same restricted drainage. Conversely, another part of a building may have a separate route. The correct distinction comes from the drainage layout, not from whether the fitting appears unaffected or is physically above the valve.
The installer or managing contractor should identify the relevant facilities and keep that information with the operating instructions. Include appliances that discharge automatically and any relevant rainwater connections. Do not ask occupants to discover the arrangement by flushing different toilets or running taps while a backup is occurring.
Follow the installed system’s indication and advice
Different protection arrangements provide different information to users. Some include controls or alarms; others may not give an obvious household signal. The handover should explain what the installed equipment can indicate and when the user must seek professional advice.
Do not assume every alarm means the valve is closed or that silence proves it is open. Identify the product and report the observed message or light from a safe location. Avoid opening panels, lifting covers or trying a manual override without the authorised procedure and competent person responsible for that equipment.
Reduce added wastewater when the route is affected
Where the system is backing up or the agreed instructions identify a closed route, stop using the affected facilities and obtain assistance. An ordinary user can avoid starting another wash cycle or flushing again; they should not disconnect electrical equipment in a wet area or manipulate unfamiliar drainage devices.
Explain to everyone using the property which facilities are affected. A vague notice saying drainage problem may not prevent somebody on another floor starting an appliance. In shared accommodation, one person should coordinate communication and the repair contact so a contractor is not receiving conflicting instructions while wastewater continues to enter the same route.
Plan alternatives before a foreseeable event
For an installation intended to protect an occupied building, discuss how occupants manage temporary restrictions. Consider the number of users, accessibility needs and whether another usable facility genuinely has a separate safe arrangement. Do not assume a neighbouring room solves the problem simply because it has not yet flooded.
A business or managed property may need a broader continuity plan. The responsible manager should decide how to maintain suitable welfare and whether activities can continue, using the relevant requirements and actual conditions. A plumbing article cannot grant permission to operate a workplace with unusable sanitation.
Do not defeat the device to restore flow
Forcing a valve open can remove the protection it is intended to provide. Dismantling it can expose contaminated wastewater or create a dangerous opening. A professional needs to assess whether the device is operating normally in response to downstream conditions or whether a defect is preventing discharge.
Tell the contractor about the current weather, any public-sewer incident and which fixtures have already been used. Keep people away from wastewater and affected electrical equipment. If there is a separate suspected gas emergency, leave and call 0800 111 999 from outside rather than treating the drain event as an explanation for every unusual smell.
Resume use through a clear handover
Do not infer that normal use is safe merely because rain stops or an alarm becomes quiet. Follow the appropriate advice for the installed system and the incident. A contractor may need to check the device, connected route or damage before confirming the relevant facilities can return to service.
Loyal Plumbers can assess private drainage problems across London and inside the M25. Provide the model, symptom or alarm, connected facilities and any water-company reference when contacting us. Afterwards, retain the finding and update the occupant instructions if the event exposed a gap. A practical handover explains what is usable, what remains restricted and who completes any further work.
Common questions
- Can I use an upstairs toilet while the basement valve is closed?
- Only if the actual drainage arrangement and operating advice permit it. Floor level alone does not prove the toilet uses a separate route.
- Does stopping tap use solve an active sewer flood?
- It can avoid adding your own wastewater to an affected route, but it does not resolve downstream flooding or replace urgent reporting and professional assessment.
- Can I remove the flap temporarily?
- Do not dismantle or override the protection experimentally. The device and downstream conditions need assessment by the appropriate professional.
