Water softener or filter: keeping the drinking-water route clear
A water softener or filter should be planned as part of the supply arrangement, not fitted wherever a spare connection is available. Identify which outlets receive treated water and where the drinking-water route should remain. A softener, cartridge filter and another treatment device do different jobs. Record the actual product, intended use and maintenance requirements rather than calling every under-sink unit a purifier. Ask what the equipment is designed to change and what it does not address. Product marketing should not be turned into an unsupported health claim.
If the reason for installation is an unexplained taste, colour or contamination concern, contact the supplier first for the appropriate assessment. Choose the tap and connection arrangement together

Where the planned arrangement changes, obtain the appropriate review before treating an earlier specification as approval for the new layout.

Plan maintenance as part of the purchase
Keep the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and identify who will carry out the required work.
