What happens during an unvented cylinder service?
An unvented cylinder service is a planned visit to carry out the maintenance appropriate to the installed model. It also creates an opportunity to identify defects, access problems and follow-up work. Prepare the cylinder information and make the installation accessible, then agree how any additional repair will be authorised. If the cylinder is actively discharging, leaking or overheating, describe that before booking: a routine maintenance appointment is not the right way to conceal an urgent fault.

Discuss your plumbing workBefore booking: identify the equipment being serviced
Read the accessible model label or use the installation paperwork. Provide the brand, model and approximate installation date, together with whether the cylinder is heated electrically or through another source. Explain if several cylinders serve the property. A booking for one unit should not silently become a maintenance visit for an entire plant room.
Mention any previous service report and unresolved recommendation. The contractor can use that information to prepare the visit and clarify its scope. Do not remove electrical covers or disturb valves to find a serial number. If it cannot be read safely, say so and arrange identification during the appointment.
Explain symptoms separately from the maintenance request
Give a short description of any change in performance: intermittent hot water, a visible drip, unusual noise or a control that no longer behaves normally. State when it happens and whether it began after previous work. An engineer needs this history even when the cylinder appears normal on arrival.
Ask whether diagnosis can be included in the visit or needs a separate allowance. Routine service tasks and replacement parts are not automatically the same scope. Clarifying this early lets the contractor allocate appropriate time and avoids the expectation that every existing fault will be repaired within a standard maintenance appointment.
Prepare access without dismantling the installation
Clear ordinary stored items from the cupboard and the route to it. Make relevant user controls, service cupboards and any normally accessible discharge observation points available. If a panel is fixed or requires another trade to remove it, explain that before the visit rather than attempting to cut an opening yourself.
In a rented or managed property, arrange keys and a contact who can authorise agreed work. Confirm that residents know the visit may interrupt hot water or other relevant services. Tell the contractor about access restrictions, pets or occupied rooms that affect the work area so the appointment can proceed safely and efficiently.
At arrival: agree what the engineer can inspect
The engineer identifies the actual model and reviews its maintenance requirements. Access and existing condition may affect which tasks can be completed. A useful start-of-visit discussion establishes these limits and any significant fault already visible, rather than proceeding as though every cylinder has the same maintenance sequence.
Manufacturer documents such as Gledhill’s StainlessLite instructions include service requirements and a record section. The engineer should use documentation appropriate to the installed product. As the customer, ask what will be checked and how findings will be explained; you do not need a technical demonstration of safety-device operation.
During the work: expect controlled checks, not a DIY lesson
The visit may involve the cylinder’s controls, expansion arrangement, safety components and relevant accessible connections, according to the model. The contractor manages isolation and any required testing. Keep the working area clear and let the engineer complete the procedure without interruptions that could confuse the installation’s operating state.
Do not operate taps, controls or valves to help unless the engineer specifically coordinates ordinary use. Avoid asking for instructions to repeat technical checks later. The useful handover is an explanation of normal user controls, visible warning signs and how to request help, while maintenance procedures remain with competent personnel.
Before further repair: understand the finding and approval
A service can identify a defective component or installation concern that needs a separate scope. Ask what was found, how it affects use and what action is recommended. Distinguish work required immediately from work that can be planned, and request an explanation if the equipment should remain out of service.
If parts are needed, agree how they will be identified and when the repair can proceed. In a managed property, the authorised contact should be reachable so the engineer is not left seeking approval through several residents. Keep any temporary or incomplete arrangement clearly recorded, including who will organise the next visit.
At handover: leave with usable records and instructions
Request the service record, identified limitations and any outstanding recommendations. Ask what normal operating state the installation has been left in and when the next maintenance is due under the relevant instructions. If the visit also included a repair, its work and checks should be identifiable rather than hidden inside a generic service entry.

Common questions
- Should I turn the cylinder off before the visit?
- Follow the contractor’s booking instructions for your installation. Do not drain it or operate safety valves in preparation unless the competent contractor is directing an appropriate procedure.
- Can the engineer service the cylinder through a tiny cupboard opening?
- That depends on the components and access needed. Explain restricted access beforehand so the contractor can assess whether preparatory work is necessary.
- Is a boiler service also a cylinder service?
- No. They concern different equipment and tasks. If both are required, identify both appliances in the booking.
- What if a fault appears before the appointment?
- Contact the contractor with the new symptoms. Urgent discharge, overheating or water affecting electrics needs prompt assessment rather than waiting silently for routine maintenance.
