Sewage smell in the house after rain: what to check

A sewage smell after rain needs investigation, but the weather pattern alone does not prove a blocked drain or public sewer fault. First distinguish a smell without visible discharge from sewage actually backing up. Record whether the odour starts indoors or outside, which fittings are affected and whether normal drainage changes.

Visible backflow needs a different response

Wastewater rising in a toilet, shower or floor drain is more urgent than an odour alone. Stop use of fixtures that worsen the escape, keep people and pets away from contaminated water and report the incident. If a public sewer may be involved, use the sewerage company’s official reporting route and keep its reference.

Do not lift a chamber cover during flooding or stand in contaminated water to inspect a drain. Water can conceal openings and electrical hazards. If gas is suspected rather than a drainage odour, leave the area and call 0800 111 999 from a safe position, avoiding flames and electrical switches. Rain does not establish that a smell is harmless.

Separate an outdoor odour from an indoor escape route

Record where you first notice the smell. An outdoor odour entering through an open window raises different questions from a smell confined to a bathroom with its windows closed. Note whether neighbours also notice an outdoor problem and whether the location is near a particular gully or boundary, without approaching unsafe openings.

An indoor water seal, connection or ventilation arrangement can still need checking even if rain seems to trigger the complaint. The drainage system should be assessed as installed. Simply adding a cap, fitting a valve or sealing around a toilet without identifying the route may leave the cause unresolved.

Why the drainage layout matters more than the weather label

A property may have separate rainwater and foul drainage, or arrangements involving a combined sewer downstream. The inspection should establish the relevant layout from available records and site findings rather than assume how rain reaches the system. Previous extensions or alterations are useful context.

Tell the contractor about recent paving, roof drainage changes or new bathroom connections. These do not prove a misconnection or blockage, but they can identify which drawings and accessible connections should be checked. A proposed survey should answer a clear question about the relevant run, condition or connection.

Keep a short rain and odour record

Note the date, whether the smell began during or after rain, its duration and the affected rooms. Add any already-observed gurgling, slow emptying or change in toilet water level. A photograph of a visible external condition may help if it can be taken from a safe, dry location.

Include wet periods without an odour and any dry-weather episodes. That helps avoid treating a weather association as a certainty. There is no need to measure rainfall yourself, open drains or repeatedly discharge water. Use the downloadable observation log for ordinary observations and give urgent incidents their own reporting reference.

When a CCTV survey is useful, and when it is not enough

CCTV can document condition inside an accessible drainage run and may help assess an obstruction, damage or a connection. Ask which run is proposed, how access is obtained and whether cleaning is needed to obtain a usable view. Keep the recorded findings and location information, not just a statement that a survey took place.

A clear image of one underground run does not prove every trap, above-ground connection or ventilation component is sound. Conversely, an imperfection on camera does not by itself prove that it explains a rain-related indoor smell. The contractor should connect the finding to the complaint before recommending excavation or replacement.

Who should authorise the work?

Check whether the suspected section is private, shared building drainage or within sewerage company responsibility. The position under a garden does not settle ownership on its own. For a flat, involve the building manager where a stack or common drain is implicated and establish who can grant access.

A public incident report and a private repair instruction are separate. Loyal Plumbers is an independent plumbing company and cannot close a utility incident, promise network repairs or represent Thames Water. If a private defect is found, agree that repair scope and keep the supplier informed where its report remains relevant.

Do not buy a backflow valve solely to cure an odour

Backflow protection needs an assessment of drainage arrangement, connected fixtures and the intended protection. An odour following rain is not sufficient evidence that a non-return valve is appropriate. Ask what flood or backflow mechanism has been established and how maintenance and use restrictions would be handled.

For an odour-only enquiry, send Loyal Plumbers the locations, weather sequence, other symptoms and any previous report. We can plan the private plumbing or drainage investigation across London and inside the M25. Agree findings and access before extending work into concealed or shared areas.

Common questions

Does rain force sewer smells into every house?
No. A recurring complaint needs assessment of the actual property and drainage arrangement. Weather timing alone does not establish a cause or the responsible party.
Should I wait for the next storm before booking?
You can arrange an inspection with the observations already available. Do not wait if there is active sewage escape, suspected gas or another immediate hazard.
Will drain jetting definitely remove a rain-related smell?
Only if an obstruction that can appropriately be cleared is relevant to the cause. Jetting is not a substitute for assessing traps, connections, ventilation and responsibility.
Is this the same as water coming through my floor?
No. Water entering through a floor needs its own source investigation. Its appearance or timing does not reliably distinguish rainwater, groundwater, plumbing leakage or sewage.
