Separate the swivel leak from nearby water paths

Water can collect around the tap base after travelling from the spout, handle or a splash on the worktop. Note whether the first wet point is the rotating joint and whether it appears while water is flowing. A puddle near the base alone does not identify the defective component. Avoid repeatedly operating a fitting that is leaking into the cabinet below.

If the leak changes when the spout moves, report that observation from normal use. Do not force it through its travel or dismantle the retaining parts to demonstrate the fault. Also mention an outlet that drips after shut-off, because the tap may have a separate water-control problem alongside the external joint leak.

Why a new cartridge may not solve it

The cartridge controls water within the tap, while the swivel arrangement allows the spout to rotate. Hansgrohe’s kitchen FAQ specifically identifies seals in the swivel area when water escapes there during operation. Replacing an unrelated internal cartridge may leave that external leakage unchanged.

The plumber should identify the installed model and inspect the relevant components rather than apply one repair to every tap leak. Some products have different spout arrangements or service methods. A seal repair is worth considering only where supported parts can be identified and the remaining surfaces and tap body are suitable for continued use.

Match seals to the exact tap model

Seals that appear similar can differ in dimensions, material and intended location. The product model and revision are more useful than the tap’s approximate age or finish. Hansgrohe provides model-identification and spare-parts resources; equivalent manufacturer records should be used for other makes.

Provide accessible labels, purchase information or a clear overall photograph if available. The team can arrange email sharing after the initial enquiry. Do not remove handles or expose connections just to find a number. If identification remains uncertain, the first visit may establish the correct part rather than complete a repair with an assumed generic seal.

Inspect the spout and body as well as the seal

A replacement seal needs a suitable surface against which to work. Wear, damage, corrosion or another defect in the rotating assembly can change the decision from a seal replacement to a spout or tap replacement. The plumber should explain the condition found and what would remain in service after the proposed repair.

If rotation has become stiff or loose, mention that alongside the leak. Do not use extra force or an unsuitable lubricant to make the spout move. The repair should follow the manufacturer’s service method and supported materials. A short-lived improvement from tightening a retaining part is not evidence that the full assembly has been repaired.

Compare the complete repair and replacement scopes

A supported seal repair can retain a sound tap and avoid disturbing its underside connections. Replacing a spout or complete tap can involve different access, parts and labour. The proposal should make clear which option addresses the actual finding, rather than compare a seal price alone with the full cost of a new installation.

For a full replacement, access beneath the sink, mounting condition, supply connections and available isolation matter. Drawers, bins and filtration equipment can obstruct the working area. A replacement tap also needs suitable operating requirements and dimensions. Keep any desired change in reach or spout height separate from the repair needed to stop the leak.

Check the joint through ordinary spout movement

After the repair, the tap should be checked under normal flow and through its intended rotation. The relevant seals and any disturbed supply connections need to remain dry. The operating check should also distinguish residual water around the outside from a continuing leak at the joint. An external wipe alone is not evidence that the problem has stopped.

Keep the part reference and any guidance on ordinary cleaning. If the leak returns, report whether it follows movement, appears at rest or now comes from another point. A clear repair record helps the next assessment focus on the repaired assembly and its condition rather than automatically repeating an unrelated cartridge change.
