Expansion vessel or internal air gap: how cylinder designs differ

Unvented hot-water systems need an appropriate way to accommodate expansion as stored water heats. Some cylinder designs use a separate expansion vessel; others incorporate an internal expansion arrangement. The correct maintenance depends on the model. An installation without a visible external vessel is not automatically incomplete, and advice for one design must not be applied to another. Identify the cylinder and its documentation before deciding what needs attention.

The purpose is the same, but the equipment differs

As water is heated, the installation must accommodate the change in volume within its designed operating arrangement. The expansion provision works alongside controls and safety components; it does not replace them. The manufacturer’s installation specifies how these parts belong together.

For an owner, the important distinction is what the model is designed to use. A photograph of another cylinder may show an external vessel while yours has none for a legitimate design reason. Equally, the absence of a visible vessel is not proof that the actual installation is correct. Identification comes before conclusions about missing or failed equipment.

A separate vessel is a distinct serviceable component

An external expansion vessel connects into the designed system arrangement and must be suitable for its application. Caleffi’s product documentation distinguishes vessels for heating systems from those for domestic water systems. That is why appearance, colour or the fact that a fitting screws onto a pipe is not a sufficient selection method.

During maintenance, the engineer assesses the relevant component and installation using the manufacturer’s requirements. Do not press an air valve, attach a pump or change a charge setting yourself to investigate a drip. The condition of the system during testing matters, and an incorrect procedure can create misleading results or unsafe operation.

Internal expansion is a product-specific design

Some cylinders incorporate expansion provision within the product. Gledhill’s Stainless Platinum range describes built-in internal expansion, while Megaflo documentation explains the arrangement for the relevant models. These examples show why the service procedure must follow the exact product rather than a universal instruction found online.

The term air gap can also be used loosely in conversation. Ask the engineer to identify the model and explain what it uses, without assuming that every cylinder bearing the same brand has an identical service procedure. Keep the correct instructions with the property records so future maintenance starts from the installed equipment.

Use the label and records rather than guesswork

Locate the accessible make, model and serial number. Check the installation documents for the expansion arrangement and any later alterations. A replacement vessel added during a past repair, or an incomplete set of paperwork, can make a quick visual assumption unreliable.

If the documentation and visible installation seem inconsistent, describe the difference to the contractor. Do not disconnect a component to check whether it is active. A competent engineer can assess the arrangement and explain whether it matches the product requirements, whether a repair is needed or whether further information is required from the manufacturer.

Do not diagnose discharge from the expansion design alone

A drip through the safety-discharge arrangement can have more than one cause. Knowing that the cylinder has an external vessel or internal expansion provision helps the investigation, but does not prove that this is the failed part. Controls, inlet conditions and valves may also need assessment.

Record the timing of discharge and any change in hot-water performance using observations already made during normal use. Do not deliberately reheat a suspect installation to reproduce a fault. Steam, unusually hot discharge or signs of overheating need urgent professional attention, rather than a routine attempt to restore expansion provision.

Compare maintenance requirements at the system level

When choosing a replacement cylinder, ask how the proposed expansion arrangement affects cupboard space, access and servicing. An internal design may change the visible component layout, but does not make the entire installation maintenance-free. An external vessel creates its own access and replacement considerations.

The comparison should remain practical rather than treating one design as universally superior. The selected model, water supply and service access determine the useful answer.

What owners should establish about expansion provision
QuestionExternal vessel arrangementInternal expansion arrangement
How is it identified?Cylinder documentation and the specified connected vesselExact cylinder model and manufacturer design
What access matters?Vessel, connection and associated componentsThe model’s relevant service points and controls
How is maintenance chosen?Application-specific manufacturer requirementsModel-specific manufacturer procedure
What does dripping prove?A fault needs assessment; vessel failure is not automaticA fault needs assessment; loss of expansion provision is not automatic

Ask for the arrangement to be explained at handover

Request a plain-language description of the installed expansion provision and how maintenance will be scheduled. The engineer should explain normal user controls and warning signs without giving you responsibility for technical pressure adjustments or safety-device work. Keep the service history with the model instructions.

Loyal Plumbers services unvented cylinders across London, including assessment of their specified expansion arrangements. Tell us the model and symptoms when enquiring, and mention any uncertainty about previous alterations. We can identify the relevant design and explain the work supported by the findings before a component or procedure is selected.

Common questions

Does no external vessel mean the installer forgot one?
Not necessarily. Some products incorporate expansion provision internally. The exact model and installation must be checked.
Can I use a bicycle pump to fix cylinder dripping?
Do not attempt a generic recharge. The cause and correct professional procedure must be established for the installation.
Is internal expansion maintenance-free?
Do not assume so. Follow the maintenance requirements for the specific cylinder.
Can a heating expansion vessel replace a domestic-water vessel?
Not simply because it fits. The replacement must be suitable for the application and match the required specification.
