Separate a surface mark from confirmed damage

Ceramic can show staining, scratches, chips or lines that are difficult to interpret from a photograph. Describe where the mark is, when it appeared and whether it has changed. A line around a mounting point, a damaged rim and a mark inside the bowl have different implications, but location alone does not establish whether continued use is safe.

If there is leakage, movement, a sharp edge or uncertainty about the pan’s integrity, keep it out of use pending assessment. Do not deliberately load the pan or use hot water to test the line. The history can explain what needs checking

If the damage was noticed immediately after another job, preserve the relevant paperwork and safe photographs. The plumber should inspect the mounting and surrounding connections as well as the visible ceramic rather than assuming the mark is an isolated cosmetic issue.

A pan that has been rocking can transfer movement to its connections, while a fixing under unsuitable stress may need more than a new bowl fitted in the same way. Why a cosmetic patch is not a safety assessment

A coating that conceals a line or stops a small visible seep does not demonstrate that the ceramic will withstand normal loading. The contractor should distinguish cosmetic assessment from replacement of a damaged sanitary fitting. Replacing only the pan still requires compatibility checks

A new pan needs to suit the waste outlet, supply or flush connection, mounting and available space. On a close-coupled toilet, retaining the cistern requires a supported pan-and-cistern combination. With a wall-hung toilet, the frame, fixing arrangement and connection positions must be checked against the proposed product.

Bring the existing model details and photographs to the enquiry if available. The replacement footprint can expose old floor marks or require changes to the connection. Similar external dimensions do not guarantee a simple swap. A clear proposal identifies the pan, retained components, necessary connector work and any finishing outside the plumbing installation.

Plan access and temporary facilities

Access can involve removing furniture panels, reaching concealed fixings or protecting finished flooring. Ceramic is heavy and can have sharp broken edges; leave handling to the appropriate people. Do not detach the pan before the replacement and working method are agreed, especially in a flat where the waste connection or building permissions introduce additional constraints.

Price the complete installed replacement

The cost includes more than the ceramic product. Relevant factors include removal, disposal, compatible connections, fixing repairs, access and any floor or wall work. If the supporting surface is defective, that finding needs a separate solution before a replacement can be installed securely. Ask which party will complete each part of the work.

At handover, the new pan and disturbed connections should be checked through normal use, with stable mounting and no unexplained leakage. Keep the product reference and installation information. Where a separate building defect remains, the completion note should identify it rather than imply that replacing the visible sanitaryware has resolved every cause of movement.
